Info
OALUG has it's own channel on IRC. We are located on the Freenode servers in the channel #oalug. You are invited to chat, hang out, and have fun.
Rules
For the most part, we are pretty liberal and laid back. The rules are the same. However, we ask that you:
- Anything is on topic. There is no "off topic", as is the case with many other channels. Come, kick your feet up and relax. Generally, the topic in the channel will be Linux/FOSS related, but most anything under the sun is safe.
- Keep the channel PG. This means no vulgarity, no porn, etc. If you wouldn't feel comfortable speaking that way in front of your kid/wife/mom/grandma, then it probably isn't appropriate in the channel.
- Remember the Golden Rule. Treat others as you want to be treated. This means no racism, trolling, sexism, slandering or personal attacks.
Meetings
The OALUG holds meetings in the IRC channel twice a month on the first and third Saturdays at 10:00am-Noon MST. This is where we plan and shape the group. If you want to be involved in the future of the group, this is a good place to start. Generally, the President will conduct the meeting unless otherwise noted.
Cloaks
OALUG is an official group of Freenode. This means that we have the opportunity to have group cloaks. The cloaks are in the format 'oalug/member/*' where * = your nick. Cloaks are exactly what you would think they are: they cloak, or hide, your IP address from the rest of Freenode. This means you are anonymous to the other users, except obviously, the Freenode staff. For example, consider the following user:
''pdk!n=pdk@c-67-163-150-28.hsd1.pa.comcast.net''
This is how he would look to any Freenode user who wanted to do a /whois on him. It is apparent that his IP address is 67.163.150.28, he is in the state of Pennsylvania and his ISP is Comcast. Thanks to a number of DNS lookup tools, I can find his home address. :) However, with an OALUG Freenode cloak, he could look like this:
''pdk!n=pdk@oalug/member/pdk''
Cloaks will only be available to recognized OALUG members. The process to recognize members is still being decided on, but most likely will involve an application, or signing a Code of Conduct with your GPG key.
